I have lived in Oxfordshire, Cornwall and London
and in each place I have grown plants - both
familiar and new ones that have caught and enchanted
my eye. In each place, surrounded by beautiful and much
loved flowers, my garden has become a refuge, -a
sanctuary where I can feel free from tiresome and
troublesome things, and my mind can stop spinning
and draw on the calm, and gather strength from the
harmony encapsulated in their beauty and fragrance.
With this sentiment at the heart of every garden, I
have found it possible to juggle the diverse
requirements of dogs, small boys and footballs,
serious vegetable growing and the requirements of
delicate young shoots of carefully nurtured plants; to
learn what will survive and even thrive in the teeth of
salt laden winds; and tuck into an unpromising
corner of a mews a few well chosen plants with
texture and colour to surprise and delight the eye.
They are gardens full of plants given to me by friends or
grown to remind me of them. Places of warmth, love
and friendship where the plants conjure up memories
and happiness.
I have gained so much pleasure from my gardens that I
should love to help you find as much pleasure in yours.
